Political Words


POLITICAL WORDS

 


  1. Politician (n.): One engaged in politics, especially an elected or appointed government official. Example: At the debate she turned out to be a very clever politician. 
  2. Campaign (n.): A series of operations undertaken to achieve a set goal. Example: Let's compare two of the candidates in this election campaign. 
  3. MP ‘Member of Parliament’ (ab.): A representative elected to certain legislative bodies. Example : Andi, a Member of Parliament, was Hilda's younger brother by five years. 
  4. Tough (adj.): Stubborn, hard, firm, rigid, inflexible, strong. Example: He's a tough politician who never gives in. 
  5. Bid for power (phr.): An attempt to obtain authority/election. Example: In his bid for power Ivor Wigg seems rather hard-boiled in his approach. 
  6. Turncoat (n.): A traitor; one who turns against a previous affiliation or allegiance. Example:  She keeps her promises, she's not what one would call a turncoat. 
  7. Electorate (phr.): The collective term for people in a country, state, or electoral constituency who are entitled to vote in an election. Example: Trump’s campaign hopes her nomination will shore up his support among Catholics, who make up a significant portion of the electorate in several swing states 
  8. Freedom of expression (n.): The right to express an opinion in public without being restrained or censored. Example: This step is an attack on freedom of expression. 
  9. Opposition (n.): A political party or movement opposed to the party or government in power. Example: The parties in opposition have voted against the bill. 
  10. Right-wing (adj.): Politically in favour of preserving traditional social orders and hierarchies, and/or government non-interference in economic affairs.Example: The Tories in Great Britain are a right-wing party. 
  11. Rights (pl. n.): A legal or moral entitlement. Example:  Human rights are violated in many countries of the world. 
  12. Slump (n.): A period of poor activity or performance, especially an extended period. Example: The party has to analyse the current slump in popularity. 
  13. Dictatorship (n.): A type of government where absolute sovereignty is allotted to an individual or a small clique.Example: 1969 saw the downfall of the brutal military dictatorship . 
  14. Left-wing (adj.): Supporting political reform to make society more egalitarian, secular, and/or democratic. Example: left-wing parties are usually banned in military dictatorships. 
  15. Party (n.): A political group considered as a formal whole, united under one specific political platform of issues. Example: MPs in Great Britain must follow the party line. 
  16. Democracy (n.): Rule by the people, especially as a form of government; either directly or through elected representatives. Example: He keeps saying that he believes in democracy but I'm not sure he's telling the truth. 
  17. Tackle (v.): To face or deal with; to attempt to overcome; to confront; to handle or manage. Example: People would like the government to tackle more serious issues like unemployment. 
  18. Monarchy (n.): A government with a hereditary head of state (e.g. a king, queen, emperor) (whether as a figurehead or ruler). Example: Is Belgium a monarchy or a republic?
